Reading and Book Reports

I’m going to give myself a goal on this and I want you guys to grade me:

“I am going to keep a group of 10-15 kids to read at least 3 days each week.  We will start at 20 minute periods, and increase to 45 minute or 1 hour sessions by July 20.  We will get set on the book report format, and on at least one morning we are leaving later or not at all, we will present our book reports to one of your afternoon groups.”

We simply have to make time for reading.  Insist on it.  Only bathroom break before settling in to read. Agree to all sit and chill out while reading and breathing because before and after that we can run and jump and play almost any way we want.

Plan:

Send messages to parents- “We are going to insist on reading groups every afternoon, and we have quite a few new sets of books for students to read.  Still, it’s best when they bring books from home based on their own interests.  Please take time to locate/share/donate books to our cause.  Please ask your student to share the book report they did that day or that week.  Please help us by rewarding them for building a stronger reading habit.”

Set a timer or remind kids of the minute the reading session will end.  Restart the clock if people are distracting.  Hold them accountable!

Prevent kids floating the hallways during the session.

Monitor Bathroom breaks before and after Reading sessions.  Monitor all bathroom breaks at TRCS by waiting in the hallway and letting them know you are nearby.

For littles:  Adjust as needed and plan on more “Read aloud” aspect.  We can switch groups as needed, and I will gladly take the youngest ones as often as it helps the whole.

Book report plan:

Before reading session starts, remind students we will sit in a circle (set up a circle to begin with) and will “whip around” to have each person in line retell, explain, foreshadow, connect to background knowledge… they should use all of these skills, but mostly it’s best just to get them comfortable telling everyone about what they read.

Once everyone has completed a couple or more minute book report around the circle, open it up to questions.  If a kid or a few kids ask good, interested questions meant to show they were listening and to encourage the book reporter to say more, they are part of the first group to be dismissed.  Maybe you guys will be doing this, and I will be outside at the bottom of the ramp on the West side of the building to catch them and ask for a quick summary before parent pick up.

So important that we ALL hold this sacred, relaxing time.  When one or more Teachers gives up too quickly, it can create chaos that is hard to settle for the rest of us.  Be a champion for quiet, unbroken attention span and READING!

July Teacher assignments and employee calendar: (Tisha, Brooke and myself as subs, but I will love to take a few days off to be strategic and move us forward. Tisha would be a great choice to run the sporty Sullivan Park days in later July.)

Monday, July 6- Buford Road (40 kids expected) AM- repeat icebreakers plans for new kids coming in and to reiterate Teacher voices.  We will rotate them around the gym and reprise the meet and greet of early June in a reasonably quick manner before heading out on the dirt roads.)
