With a full and ambitious schedule of field studies, trips, and activity slated this Summer, we are going to love our afternoon Reading time.
Every afternoon our plan is to have groups back from trips and in the classrooms at 3:30 or 4:00 PM. We will tailor reading groups as needed, encouraging "cross age buddies" and mentorship along with chances for Students to "Lead their own Learning." There is a strong correlation between interest and reading engagement. And for the littles, we will do plenty of read alouds and guided reading to help build great habits.
Please help us by donating a few books that you think would be appealing for kids. We have 8 sets of books ready to share, but it always helps to share books and encourage kids to browse. Last year, Finn Smith did an amazing job sharing books from home. He had kids sitting to read adventure, outdoorsy, fishing books with real interest. Can't believe he graduated this weekend!
Specific plans:
Reading groups managed by Teachers every afternoon leading up to parent pickup.
Basic Book Report format as the basis for discussion and sharing what we've learned.
Cross/Age and mentoring from older to younger- This is a hallmark of the Two Rivers culture and I have witnessed the good in this approach for many years.
"Earn In." Some of our best trips and experiences do not yet have specific rosters associated. Reading groups will be a great chance for kids to earn in on special experiences for smaller groups as the Summer unfolds.
